The White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Multi-Million Dollar Contract.
In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract bringing in the high-profile player.
Contract Details and Player Perks
The deal features a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside annual pay of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the final year.
Additionally, Murakami's compensation may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:
- $1 million for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500K for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking fourth through 10th.
- An identical bonus for earning the ROY honor.
His deal provides that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his approval and makes him a free agent at the termination of the term. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Posting Fee and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a 15% cut of any triggered incentive payments.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth player from Japan to play for the Chicago franchise, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 in February, enters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing last in the division but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, breaking the single-season record for a player in Japan formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's elusive Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Despite recording often, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 RBIs.
Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off two-base hit that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The following day in the championship game against the Team USA, he slugged a tying home run in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent title triumph.
The power hitter is set to be formally introduced at a media availability on Monday.
