The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get distracted by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… sort of.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
