Boxing is in a significant decline this period, with a scarcity of big events and markedly reduced compelling bouts than usual. Wardley, a former white-collar slugger, who only took up boxing when he was 20, had no amateur boxing history and has always had to overcome questions regarding his technical limitations. But he is also on the verge to a shot at the title.

“This is the biggest bout, right now, in the heavyweight division. These two boxers have stepped up when neither one was required to take this bout. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have formally instructed the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was injured. Parker is eager to compete regardless.

“Fabio is also in an excellent situation and he only had to wait for his opportunity. He said ‘I refuse.’ He chose to box – and versus Parker because it gives him a chance to accelerate his path.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is do or die. I am not thinking about losing. I respect my opponent and what he has done and the way he's trained for this bout. But I am on a higher plane and I am intending to prove it on fight night.”

Wardley's Stance

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “It is a massive night for the both of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my career and the most important fight ever. But every time I step up I rise to the occasion. This Saturday will be no exception. The gap between where Joe is and where people think I am has been a recurring narrative throughout my career.

“He has been going around the block for a extended duration, with a numerous contests on his resume. In no way is he an aged fighter but he has been in the sport for a long time and had some heavy fights. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a far greater number of those compared to me.”
