A standout among Avatar's best episodes is honored with its own MTG collector's set.

Typically, clip shows are disliked from viewers as a needless diversion, or perhaps tolerated as a necessity for shows in the age of regular broadcasts. This wasn't always the situation, but Avatar: The Last Airbender demonstrated this through "The Ember Island Players," a popular episode from its final season now being granted an exclusive Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair release.

Information of the collector's edition

The full Secret Lair superdrop for the forthcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was announced recently. This includes five Secret Lairs, and while a set named "My Cabbages!" is certainly amusing nod to the show's most famous minor character, the other collections appear slightly lacking creativity, aside from one remarkable entry: "The Ember Island Players."

Inspired by the seventeenth episode from season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, this Secret Lair features the following cards:

  • 1x Phantasmal Image portrayed as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
  • 1x Braid of Fire
  • 1x Cursed Mirror
  • 1x Mask of Memory
  • 1x Thespian's Stage

The reason this episode remains memorable

Audiences of the show clearly recall this installment, which functioned as a recap of Aang and his friends' adventure prior to the final episode. In contrast to typical clip shows, or "clip shows," "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated by budget restrictions or production issues. The show's makers truly wanted to provide audiences an opportunity to revisit the series' story, but they decided to approach it inventively.

During the installment, the crew view a stage show based on their journeys on a stage located on Ember Island, called The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is inaccurate, over-the-top, and utterly comical. It succeeds since it plays with the characters' perception regarding their own identities, juxtaposing them compared to how society (and particularly the Fire Nation) sees them. It possesses the right amount of self-awareness, and it becomes arguably the finest interpretation of the series we have had.

Appeal and cost

In terms of value, this is a great Secret Lair for one simple reason: Braid of Fire. This particular card trades for $20 and $40 on various platforms currently, and at $29.99 you can snag the entire Secret Lair, or $39.99 for the premium foil treatment.

Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender collection will be available during early access events starting November 14 and debuts internationally on Nov. 21.
